چکیده

Understanding of ecosystem structure and functioning requires detailed knowledge about plant–animal interactions, especially when keystone species are involved. The recent consideration parrots as legitimate seed dispersers has widened the range mechanisms influencing life cycle many plant species. We examined interactions between burrowing parrot Cyanoliseus patagonus two dominant algarrobo trees (Prosopis alba Prosopis nigra) in Monte Desert, Argentina. recorded abundance foraging behaviour parrots; quantified handling, consumption, wasting, dispersal ripe unripe pods; tested viability soft hard seeds wasted transported by parrots. found a high They predated on from pods while exclusively feeding upon pulp wrapping pods. Frequent pod wasting beneath or transport at distance invariably implied multiple each event. Moreover, retained after desiccation outside mother plant, suggesting effective partial predation due to predator satiation effect. In half flocks, least one departed flight with its beak, 10–34% flock components moving distances averaging 238 m (P. alba) 418 nigra). Do leucocytes reflect condition in nestling burrowing parrots Cyanoliseus patagonus in the wild?

The different leucocyte types are an important part of the immune system. Thus, they have been used in ecological studies to assess immune function and physiological stress in wild birds. It is generally assumed that increased stress and decreased condition are associated with an increase in the ratio of heterophils to lymphocytes, the H/L ratio. We studied leucocyte profiles in relation to bod...

The importance of scale-dependent ravine characteristics on breeding-site selection by the Burrowing Parrot, Cyanoliseus patagonus

In birds, the environmental variables and intrinsic characteristics of the nest have important fitness consequences through its influence on the selection of nesting sites. However, the extent to which these variables interact with variables that operate at the landscape scale, and whether there is a hierarchy among the different scales that influences nest-site selection, is unknown. This inte...

Humans as Long-Distance Dispersers of Rural Plant Communities

Humans are known for their capacity to disperse organisms long distances. Long-distance dispersal can be important for species threatened by habitat destruction, but research into human-mediated dispersal is often focused upon few and/or invasive species. Here we use citizen science to identify the capacity for humans to disperse seeds on their clothes and footwear from a known species pool in ...

Endangered plant-parrot mutualisms: seed tolerance to predation makes parrots pervasive dispersers of the Parana pine

Parrots are largely considered plant antagonists as they usually destroy the seeds they feed on. However, there is evidence that parrots may also act as seed dispersers. We evaluated the dual role of parrots as predators and dispersers of the Critically Endangered Parana pine (Araucaria angustifolia). Eight of nine parrot species predated seeds from 48% of 526 Parana pines surveyed. Observation...

Lizards as pollinators and seed dispersers: an island phenomenon

Although it is well established that many insects, birds and mammals serve as important pollinators and seed dispersers of flowering plants, the role of lizards in these processes has traditionally been considered as rare and less important. However, recent work shows both that their role as mutualistic agents has been underestimated and also reveals a striking pattern – that pollination and se...
